Starting from 10 February 2023, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) officially launched digital driving license via the MyJPJ app. Many Malaysians welcomed this move as it offers a more convenient and paperless way to carry their license. However, there are certain conditions and limitations you need to be aware of before relying solely on this feature.
What Is a Digital Driving License?
A digital driving license is an online version of your physical license accessible through the MyJPJ app. It displays key personal details such as:
- Full name
- NRIC number
- License class
- Expiry date
This digital version is recognised for enforcement purposes within Malaysia, replacing the need to carry your physical license when driving locally.

Who Can Use the Digital License?
Currently, the digital license is available only for Malaysian citizens driving within the country. If you plan to drive overseas, you must still carry the physical license, as other countries are not obligated to recognise Malaysia’s digital version.
What Are the Benefits?
- Quick & Convenient – Just open the MyJPJ app to show your license.
- Eco-Friendly – Reduces the need for plastic cards.
- Real-Time Updates – License details are automatically kept up to date.
The Downsides?
- Not Valid Abroad – You’ll still need the physical license if driving overseas.
- App & Internet Dependent – Issues with the app or no internet connection could be problematic.
- Requires Active MyJPJ Account – You need to ensure your app is working and your login details are accessible.

Does It Replace the Physical License?
According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, carrying a physical license is no longer mandatory for holders of a competent driving license (CDL) and private vehicle owners. However, the digital version is optional, and drivers can still renew and use their physical card if preferred.
The digital driving license offers modern convenience, but comes with limitations. It is valid only within Malaysia, and a physical license is still needed when driving abroad. So while it’s great for everyday use, make sure you understand the full picture before ditching your physical card.
